6 Tips To Pack Like A Pro

While you can outsource all the planning and booking of your vacation to your favorite Travel planner, there’s one task you’ll have to tackle on your own… packing.

Packing for a trip can be stressful. You want to make sure that you have everything you need, but you also don’t want to overpack and have to deal with a suitcase that is too heavy to lift when you get to your destination.

Here are my top 6 tips for efficient packing:

Limit the shoes

They take up a lot of space in your bag and they add weight. Try to keep it to no more than 3 pairs. Grab either boots for cool weather or a comfy sandal for hot destinations. Then either a cute heel or flat that works with any outfit for dinner. The last pair is your MUST-HAVE, a great pair of walking shoes.

Never bring a new pair of shoes on your trip. You want to enjoy sightseeing without dealing with blisters or sore feet. I recommend wearing the heaviest (but still comfortable) pair of shoes on your travel day. You can always take them off during your flight.

Packing cubes

They are worth the hype. These little gems can help you save space and stay organized. If you’re going to have a lot of bulkier items, go for the compression cubes to create even more space.

Here are my favorites: Compression Packing Cubes

*Warning* Careful with the compression cubes. Keep in mind that while you’re creating more space, you don’t want to end up with an overweight suitcase so making extra space doesn’t mean you need to add more stuff.

Skip single-use clothing

The easiest way to cut down on the bulk in your bag is to get rid of clothes that can only be worn once. Dresses or one-pieces, choose items you are happy to wear again on the same trip. For separates, the trick is to pick a color palette and stick with it. Then mix and match your way into multiple outfits with the same few pieces. You can add accessories to create more differences.

Speaking of clothes, limit it to items that travel well. I don’t care how much you love that one dress or top, if it wrinkles beyond redemption in a bag, leave it at home.

Plan ahead

The simplest way to make packing less stressful is to make a plan. Write a list. Start setting out your outfits and travel toiletries. Travel often? Do what I do, and keep a toiletry bag ready. Just be sure to check it and replace what’s needed before you go.

This is my favorite toiletry bag.

Pack an empty bag

Fold down an empty duffle or tote into the bottom of your bag. Then you’ll have extra space for the trip home. Either fill it with all the new stuff you picked up in your destination or simply enjoy not having to pack so tight for your return. Here’s one that has come in handy for me: foldable tote

Wear it on your flight

Are you taking a winter coat? Need to take heavy boots? Whatever it is, put it on your body instead of in your bag. If it’s heavy or awkward-sized, this is the perfect way to transport.
